Matthew Upson

Founder I CEO

Hello and welcome! I’m Matthew, founder of Take 5 Respite Services, with over 25 years of experience supporting seniors and individuals with special needs, including those facing mental health challenges. My work spans diverse populations—individuals with developmental disabilities, dual diagnoses, traumatic brain injuries, and complex medical needs. I take a personalized approach to care, focusing on each individual’s unique needs to enhance their well-being and promote meaningful growth.

My career is rooted in a commitment to treating every individual with the dignity, respect, and care I would expect for myself and my loved ones. This led me to roles as an Educational Assistant (EA) specializing in special needs, as well as a Personal Support Worker (PSW). Over the years, I’ve built my expertise through hands-on experience in hospitals, treatment facilities, and group homes, along with ongoing training and professional development.

Throughout my career, I have supported youth exploring their identity, adults managing mental health challenges, and seniors navigating the complexities of aging. Earlier in my career, I was often focused on the more intensive and demanding aspects of care. However, as my experience has grown, so has my perspective. The more years I’ve spent in this field, the more I’ve come to truly value and enjoy helping families who need respite. Today, my focus is on creating positive, meaningful experiences—ensuring individuals are not only supported, but genuinely enjoying their day, sharing moments, exploring, and leaving with lasting memories and a smile.

One of the most meaningful experiences in my career was working as a consultant for adolescent females at a youth rehabilitation center in Inukjuak, Nunavik. This role deepened my understanding of the challenges families face and ultimately inspired me to establish Take 5 Respite Services—providing reliable, compassionate support for families in need.

As a husband and father of four, I understand the importance of balance, trust, and peace of mind when it comes to your loved ones. I value time spent with family and friends, and in my personal time, I enjoy golfing, hockey, fishing, and traveling.
